The easiest way to determine pitch without climbing on the roof is to download a free roof pitch app on your Apple or Android device. One we know that works well is “PitchFactor” but there are several others.
The second option is to easily measure it yourself. All you need is a level and a tape measure. The level should be at least 12″ long – A 24” level works best.
Place the end of your level against the roof. Hold the level straight and level until the bubble is centered. Measure the vertical distance down from the your 12” mark on the level down to the roof. This is the amount your roof inclines in a 1-foot span or the “pitch” of your roof.
Pitch can also be measured the pitch from the attic most of the time in a similar manner.
If the distance from your roof to the 12” mark on the level is 4” then your roof pitch noted as 4:12
If the distance from your roof to the 12” mark on the level is 6” then your roof pitch noted as 6:12
